Gudbrandsdalens Uldvarefabrik has supplied the Fiksdal wool textile to the Flåm Railway for many years – one of the world’s most spectacular rail journeys. With its dramatic mountain landscapes, waterfalls and steep gradients, the Flåm Railway has become an iconic travel experience for visitors from around the world.

"The fabric on the seats is perhaps the single most important element of the interior when it comes to the guest's visual impression of the train carriage. Passenger feedback consistently highlights the comfort of the seats, confirming our choice of natural materials.

By using wool products from Gudbrandsdalens Uldvarefabrik, we ensure that tradition and quality go hand in hand with a modern travel experience."

Jarle Tokvam, Operations Manager, Flåm Railway

The Flåm Railway is no ordinary rail line. Over the 20-kilometre journey between Myrdal and Flåm, passengers travel through one of Norway’s most distinctive fjord and mountain landscapes. This places high demands on the materials used in the interior, both in terms of comfort, durability and long-term performance.

The choice fell on Fiksdal, designed by Per Bjørnar Imsjø in 1998, the same year the textile received the Norwegian Award for Design Excellence. The organic pattern is inspired by oak leaves and woven from 95% wool and 5% polyamide. With high durability and documented technical performance, the textile is developed for interior environments exposed to intensive use over time.

The custom designed fabric Fiksdal upholstered on Flåm Railway is woven in Lillehammer.

Fiksdal is developed for transport interiors and public spaces where high demands are placed on durability, safety and longevity. The textile meets relevant international certifications and standards, including IMO certification and Crib 5.

For the Flåm Railway, it is precisely the combination of Norwegian wool design, comfort, durability and documented technical quality that has made Fiksdal a natural choice for many years.
